Are you looking for more ways to engage with your child at home while helping them to learn about various topics? Sensory bins and activities are a great way to teach your child while also keeping them interested in the topics and activities. Sensory bins also offer opportunities for children to learn through play. Depending on the materials, sensory bins can help develop several fine motor skills such as scooping and pouring, as well as teaching cooperative play skills.
This week, we learned all about paleontology- fossils, bones, and excavation sites! Not only did the children enjoy the different textures, but it also allowed them to work on fine motor skills such as holding the paintbrush. This helps improve hand muscles and is a great way to prepare for writing.
Children had the opportunity to learn about fossils this week- a remnant, impression or trace of an animal or plant from the past. Allow your child to put on their paleontologist hat and dig in- literally! Your child will get to brush away the dirt to reveal different dinosaur bones. To make this sensory bin, you will need:
-a shallow bin or bucket
-laminated pictures of different dinosaur types
-dirt (or sand for a less messy alternative)
-paintbrushes
-small rocks or pebbles (for added enrichment)
-scoops or measuring cups
Combine the materials in the bin and dig and brush away dirt to reveal a little piece of history!
